Coral reefs, being one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, are home to thousands of different species and types of animals, from fish to crustaceans and sponges.
The reason why coral reefs are so diverse is that many animals use the reefs for shelter and food. Apart from the thousands of species of fish which can be found in coral reefs, there are also many whales and dolphins.
The corals themselves are also partly animal. Other animals that live in the coral reef biome are sea snakes, sea worms, sea jellies, stingrays, turtles, dugongs, molluscs and more.
Many birds also visit coral reefs each year as a food source. They will snatch up their unsuspecting prey from the waters before eating them. Eagles are very well known for doing this.
